A future-oriented port that aims for sustainability

The Port of Drammen is more than just a logistics hub – the port actively contributes to a greener and more sustainable future.

With a central location in south-eastern Norway and direct access to sea, rail, and road networks, the Port of Drammen already has a solid foundation for environmentally friendly transportation. However, to meet the port’s goal of net zero emissions by 2030, efforts are being made to strengthen this through key environmental initiatives.

Insights from the port director

Shipping is already one of the most environmentally friendly ways to transport goods, and the Port of Drammen aims to build on this. So far, we have ensured that we have a solid infrastructure that connects the most eco-friendly modes of transport. Additionally, we are well underway with a number of initiatives that improve our environmental footprint, both in terms of operational changes and measures that make our port operations more sustainable. We are committed to maintaining a good relationship with the city.

Arne Fosen, Port Director

Our sustainability goals

The Port of Drammen is actively working with five of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. These are all central in the port’s strategic plan towards 2040.

The port focuses on net zero emissions from port operations, green logistics and cooperation with local and international stakeholders. Through these measures, the port takes the local environment into account and has, among other things, applied noise reduction measures and built green buffer zones around the port. Open dialogue with the citizens ensures that the port remains a safe and environmentally friendly area for port customers and the local community.

Measures to achieve our sustainability goals

Intermodal Transport Solutions
Increased transfer of goods from road to sea and rail. By 2030, the port will enable that 50% of the goods can be transported from the port by rail (on routes where cargo trains operate).

Onshore Power Supply
The Port of Drammen has shore power at all quay facilities, allowing ships to dock emission-free. Ships using shore power reduce their emissions by approx. 2.4 tons of CO2 per day.

Environmental Fees and Discounts
Ships with lower emissions than the requirements of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) receive a discount on port fees. Ships that cannot connect to shore power facilities incur an additional fee.

Equipment Replacement
We continuously replace equipment and vehicles. An example is our cranes, which either uses electricity or HVO100.

Waste Management
Ships docking at the Port of Drammen sort their waste. The port has ensured good routines and waste solutions.

Green Buffer Zones
We develop green areas to reduce noise and create a more pleasant local environment along the riverside.

Noise Measurement
The port conducts regular noise measurements to ensure that the port remains a good neighbour and stays within recommended levels.

More goods by sea and rail

It is expected that freight traffic will increase by 70 percent by 2050. One of the most important climate measures is to shift freight transport from road to sea and rail. The Port of Drammen works closely with cargo owners, freight forwarders, and transporters to facilitate this.

Nearly one million tons of goods arrive at the Port of Drammen each year. Between 25-10 percent of this is transported further by rail from the port. The volume varies from year to year due to fluctuations in rail services.

Green projects at the port

The Port of Drammen actively participates in projects and collaborates with partners on solutions that contribute to environmentally friendly operations and green logistics.

Emission-free dredging with Granfoss

In collaboration with the tech-startup Granfoss, the Port of Drammen will be the test site for an autonomous and emission-free method for dredging. The solution has the potential of revolutionizing the way we conduct dredging in the future.

Clean Drammensfjord

This is a project in collaboration with the Norwegian Environment Agency and the municipalities of Lier and Drammen. The project aims to prevent the spread of environmental pollutants and improve the water quality in the Drammensfjord.

The AUTOHUB Project

Together with the University of South-Eastern Norway (USN) and European partners, we are exploring autonomous and sustainable transport and logistics solutions for both people and goods. This project will promote new, green solutions for port operations and seamless flow of cargo.

Green logistics with Norgips

Through a collaboration with Norgips, we have reduced CO2 emissions by 221 tons annually by combining sea and rail transport with trucks powered by biogas.
