Back on the growth track
After a record year in 2022 with 121,655 imported cars, the Port of Drammen experienced a significant decline in 2023, when imports fell to 106,325 cars. Now, this year’s figures show that the market is on the rise again.
– After a challenging period for the car market in general, it is gratifying to see that we are moving in the right direction,” says Arne Fosen, Port Director at the Port of Drammen.
– With over 116,500 cars to the quays in 2024, we see that car imports are stabilizing at a high level, confirming Drammen’s position as Norway’s most important port for car imports. The year became the third best in history.”

Stronger new car market
The increase in car imports in 2024 is linked to a gradual improvement in the new car market after last year’s decline. Although high interest rates and increased taxes still affect consumers’ purchasing power, the demand for cars has picked up, especially in the second half of 2024.
– Particularly pleasing is the high proportion of zero-emission cars in 2024. Throughout the autumn, the proportion of newly registered electric cars has been around 94%, a level that is unique in the world,” says Fosen.
The Port of Drammen as a central actor
The Port of Drammen has been the number one hub for car imports to Norway for many years. With well-equipped facilities and an efficient overall system for car logistics and preparation, the port has established its role as the most important gateway for cars to the Norwegian market.
– Maintaining such a high volume for several years in a row shows that we deliver quality and efficiency. We are proud of what the overall system in Drammen achieves,” says Fosen.
7 out of 10 cars that come to Norway pass through the Port of Drammen before being distributed further across the country to the dealership network.
Looking towards 2025
Although the figures for 2024 are positive, the market is still sensitive.
– We are optimistic, but also realistic. The future will depend on how the economy develops further. In the meantime, we are pleased with this year’s good figures, says Fosen.
