At Holmen, the port area in Drammen, there is a lot of activity beyond direct port operations. Goods are stored, produced, and prepared here before being transported further across Norway by sea, rail, and road. Here are some of the activities carried out at Holmen every year.
Car logistics
The Port of Drammen is Norway’s largest port for car imports. An essential part of car logistics at the port is the technical and cosmetic preparation of cars before they are sent to car dealerships and customers. When cars arrive at the port, they are made ready for delivery, including profiling, washing, charging, and installation of additional equipment.
Grain
Many notice the large silo at Holmen, but not everyone knows that it receives 50,000 tons of grain in a typical year. Grain from agriculture in Buskerud and Northern Vestfold is collected in the silo for drying. Food grain and feed grain are sorted separately, and around 30 cargo ships are loaded with grain for distribution across the country. Approximately 85 percent of grain cultivation in Norway occurs in the eastern region, making Drammen an efficient logistics hub for supplying Norway with grain.
Bitumen
Bitumen is a dark, solid, or liquid hydrocarbon derived from crude oil. It is often used as a binder in asphalt. Bitumen changes consistency when heated and works excellently as an adhesive. Deliveries of bitumen from the Holmen depot represent a noticeable share of the total market in Norway.
Concrete
At Holmen, there is a large concrete facility that supplies Southeast Norway with concrete. Holmen is an excellent logistics hub where ships arriving with cement and sand unload directly into the facility. At the unmanned terminal, vehicles can collect cement directly from the facility to tank trucks. The cement is then mixed into concrete and transported to assignments.
Wood Pellets
Moelven is a leading supplier of wood-based products. Moelven Pellets exports approximately 80.000 tons of wood pellets to the European market from the Port of Drammen each year. Wood pellets are used in larger heating systems for instance at schools or hospitals. Moelven Pellets rents warehouses at the port for intermediate storage.
Steel Reinforcement
Celsa Steel, located in Mo i Rana, is a leading producer of reinforcement steel in the Nordics. Production is based on recycling scrap metal, with approximately 700,000 tons recycled annually – equivalent to about 2 Eiffel Towers per week. Parts of these materials arrive in regular deliveries by ship to Celsa at Holmen, where various reinforcement products are prefabricated for delivery in Eastern Norway.
